I grew up around athletics my whole life and tried just about all of the sports I could. I played American Football and baseball, Ran Track and cross country, and Swam. I eventually missed having a team to train with while in college and joined the UNC Rugby Team. One of my favorite sports moments came from my first rugby game. My coach threw me into the game and said if I got the ball, just run and try to score (don't even think about passing). I got passed the ball, and the first time I touched the ball, I scored! After I graduated from UNC, I decided that I ought to go back to UNC for my Master's in teaching. I always had a passion for teaching. I think what draws me to teaching is the ability to help students grow, support them, and help students see the world and themselves in new ways. I see coaching in a very similar way. Coaching is about supporting athletes, challenging them to be the best version of themselves, and ultimately, being another person in their life, cheering them on!
Working out, going on runs, and sports were always safe places for me, especially when I was a kid. I spent a lot of time as a kid finding who I was in the small runs or finding a sense of belonging on my middle school football team. Despite a childhood that had me moving around a lot, moving my body always left me feeling accomplished, cleared my head, and gifted me with lifelong friendships. To this day, movement is a safe place for me. It is a way to clear anxiety, and build friendships, and is my favorite version of self-care.
My passion in coaching is to make sure that every person feels a sense of community and works to build a stronger sense of themselves. I think fitness can help us find what we are capable of and push past that, all while laughing with friends who see the best in us and hold us accountable.
